Le thème du sanatorium est récurrent dans l'histoire de l'architecture moderne. Présent dans les ouvrages de référence, il a aussi sa place dans les monographies consacrées aux architectes majeurs du XXe siècle : le sanatorium est un édifice emblématique dans l'œuvre de Jan Duiker aux Pays-Bas, d'Alvar Aalto en Finlande, et pour la France de Tony Garnier, d'André Lurçat, de Pol Abraham et d'Henry-Jacques Le Même. La tuberculose, la Peste Blanche, comme on nomme alors le fléau, fait au début du XXe siècle 100 000 victimes par an en France ; un gigantesque programme de lutte contre la maladie, en partie inspiré par les Etats-Unis, et dont l'apogée se situe entre les deux guerres, est à l'origine de la construction des sanatoriums sur le territoire national. La valeur thérapeutique du sanatorium se fonde sur l'hypothèse de la cure d'air, de lumière, de soleil, et sur l'isolement des malades contagieux, conduits à contempler un paysage naturel à l'écart des méfaits de la ville industrielle. Ce vaste défi, mené en l'absence de moyens thérapeutiques pleinement efficaces, s'est traduit en France par près de 250 réalisations, qui s'échelonnent du début du XXe siècle aux années 1950 ; l'avènement des traitements par antibiotiques annonce alors la désuétude de l'institution et de ses instruments. L'ouvrage analyse principalement le cas des réalisations françaises dans leur rapport aux influences allemandes, suisse, hollandaise, et américaine. La plupart des typologies produites relèvent en effet de transferts étrangers, et malgré les projets de Tony Garnier, il faut attendre les années 1920 pour que les tenants français du Mouvement moderne, architectes et aussi ingénieurs, s'engagent dans ce programme hygiéniste dicté par les médecins tout puissants, et apportent des réponses exemplaires, comme le témoignent notamment les réalisations du Plateau d'Assy ou les étonnants solariums tournants. Ce nouveau concept d'isolement des malades, soumis à une stricte discipline médicale, relève d'un nouvel ordre moral, d'une nouvelle culture de l'habiter ; le sanatorium devient en quelque sorte le condensateur social destiné à réinsérer les malades exclus, et fait figure de référence pour la réalisation des nouveaux programmes d'hôpitaux, d'hôtels, et de logements. Bien qu'aujourd'hui obsolète, il dépasse donc la simple traduction d'une politique de lutte contre la tuberculose, pour se poser en modèle de société, où les valeurs environnementales et les questions de santé dans la ville et l'habitat annoncent les défis auxquels nous sommes aujourd'hui confrontés.

Mies van der Rohe is one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century. The inventor of the modern steel-and-glass skyscraper, Mies was a found of modernism, the head of the Bauhaus, and the creator of landmarks such as the Barcelona Pavilion and the Seagram Building. His architectural style was based on aesthetic principles that reflected not only how he built, but also how he lived. In 1937 Mies came to the United States as a refugee from Nazi Germany. claiming that "one does not live in the past", Mies never spoke about his last years there. Did he have something to hide? Dit boek bevat foto's van de elf nieuwbouwmoskeeën in Vlaanderen van de Belgisch-Turkse fotograaf Abdul-Vahit Duman. Vooraf schetst Meryem Kanmaz de evolutie van de moskeebouw in Vlaanderen van 'schuilmoskeeën' in omgebouwde woonhuizen, winkels of garages naar 'heimweemoskeeën' - replica's van het land van herkomst - en de groei naar moskeeën met een meer hedendaagse, Europese architectuur. De Duitse kunsthistoricus Christian Welzbacher bekijkt in een essay de moskeebouw in de rest van Europa en voert een pleidooi voor een eigen Euro-islamarchitectuur. In het hoofdstuk 'Moskeeperikelen' wordt de moeizame bouwgeschiedenis van drie van de nieuwbouwmoskeeën onderzocht: Een Turkse moskee in Beringen, een Marokkaanse moskee in Genk en een Pakistaanse moskee in Borgerhout.
